Why steam cleaning beats shampooing your sofa

8 min read

A fabric sofa cushion being steam-cleaned

The science behind heat and dwell time — and why leaving no residue keeps your upholstery cleaner for far longer than shampoo ever could.

Shampooing a sofa feels thorough, but it has a hidden cost: residue. Detergent foams worked into upholstery rarely rinse out completely, and what stays behind is sticky — which means it attracts dirt faster than before. Within weeks, a shampooed sofa can look grubbier than it did to begin with.

Steam cleaning works differently. High-temperature water vapour penetrates the fibres, loosening body oils, dust and grime, while heat sanitises and the extraction draws the loosened soil back out. There is no soap to leave behind, so nothing remains to re-attract dirt.

The two numbers that matter are heat and dwell time — how hot the steam is and how long it stays in contact with the fabric. Get both right and you lift far more than a surface clean, without soaking the cushions or risking watermarks.

The result is upholstery that is genuinely cleaner, dries faster, and stays fresh for longer. For family sofas and mattresses especially, it is the method we reach for every time.
